It's Going To Be A Long Wait For Our Next Rockstar Game

In October 2018, Rockstar Games released its first title in five years: Red Dead Redemption 2. But the developer has remained tight-lipped about their plans for the year that follows. Whatever content the company releases, fans aren't likely to find a new game in the lineup. Here's why Rockstar won't release any big titles in 2019.

While other publishers feel the pressure to pump out new games every year, Rockstar moves at its own pace, usually taking at least two years in between major projects. That gap got bigger in 2013 with the release of Grand Theft Auto 5. After the unprecedented success of that game, they took three years before they even announced a new AAA title.

After five years and two delays, Red Dead Redemption 2 galloped onto the scene in October 2018. It was the publisher's longest gap between releases up to that point. The games they make aren't getting any simpler, so a wait of at least two years before another big project sees release seems likely.

Rockstar has never been a studio that pumps out games, and they also don't tend to drop them out of nowhere. Grand Theft Auto 5 was announced in October 2011 and released almost two years later. Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a similar pattern, with the announcement falling in October 2016, two years before its release in 2018. The tendency is for Rockstar to announce new titles at least one to two years before their release. This gives them time to build up buzz via long-term marketing campaigns. Teasers, promos, logos, gameplay trailers, all generating hype for a release.

With no new game announcements in 2018, a 2019 release of anything big seems unlikely. Over 2,000 people contributed to Red Dead Redemption 2 during its eight-year development period, and plenty of people who bought the game haven't even finished playing it yet. So while the company could throw a curveball with new GTA or Red Dead content in 2019, or a novel project like the LA Noire VR game, you shouldn't expect a new full-fledged title anytime soon.
