This kind of highway exists in only 3 places in the world:
▶︎ Chirihama Nagisa, Ishikawa (Japan)
▶︎ Daytona Beach (USA)
▶︎ Waitarere Beach (New Zealand)
This is an 8km (5 mile) stretch of official highway.
The reason why large cars such as general cars and motorcycles can travel such as sightseeing buses is because the sand grains on this shore are particularly fine-packed and they absorb seawater and become hard like a paved road, so unlike a regular sandy beach, vehicles won't sink.
★ PSA: DO NOT park on the side of the road or enter the sea unless you have a board for the wheels to get out -- and I would not advise it. I was lucky enough to have a nice day with hard sand at the beach edge. You may not be so lucky!
This is a real road. There are traffic laws I wasn't fully aware of at the time and despite what other tourists do, travel safely and follow all Japanese traffic laws ★
