Soldiers are being encouraged to give up their full English fry-up for a new 'warrior's breakfast', the avocado on toast, loved by Instagraming millennials the world over.A trial is being conducted in units in HQ 4 Infantry Brigade at Catterick, North Yorkshire, as the British Army struggles to fight the fat.The move follows comments from Lieutenant-Colonel Ben Watts who called obesity rates within the army a 'national security threat', according to The Times.Quoting research the commanding officer of the Royal Dragoon Guards said that 57 per cent of soldiers were overweight, with 12 percent obese, criticising private caterers who had been feeding troops pizza. Now a catering contractor Aramark has presented a new nutritional plan with help of precise computer software. The breakfast will now be served in two parts, a pre-breakfast including healthy shakes, yogurt and fruit provided to troops before their morning training and a post-workout breakfast of avocado on toast to help them replenish lost energy. The changes are being trialled as part of the Army healthy living pilot which will run until December.Soldiers are also encouraged to get a good night’s sleep and independently exercise outside of training. It is hoped the trial will result in more deployable soldiers with fewer injuries.Warrant Officer one, Paul Buckerfield, who is helping deliver the initiative told Soldier Magazine: ‘Pre-PT breakfast is available from 7am to 8am - this gives personnel the opportunity to take on the carbohydrates they will need during their sessions.‘The options are light so troops can eat half an hour before they go out to do their phys. They can then come back after for something to help with recovery.’.
