A Dalit rights group has called for a general strike and a demonstration in New Delhi on Wednesday, August 21, to protest the demolition of the Ravidas Mandir temple. The group has called for its supporters across the country to travel to the capital to take part in the day-long protest that is due to take place at Jantar Mantar. Several civil society groups and followers of the Ravidas temple have said they will participate in the demonstrations, according to local media outlets. A similar protest on Tuesday, August 13, caused significant road and rail disruptions.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation and business disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the protest and during the strike action.
