Growing up African: “There is a sense of togetherness in otherness”| The Drum

Growing up in Australia isn't always easy.

Over the past year, a range of books have come out exploring what it's like to be a citizen of a country, but to feel different.

Sefakor Zikpi is one of four writers who shared their experiences with The Drum.

On the surface, their upbringings appear to be very different, but there are shared themes of otherness, isolation and struggling with identity through experiences of racism or prejudice.

Sefakor is a contributor to the book ‘Growing up African in Australia’, she says moving to Australia she was made to feel different because of her skin colour and felt she didn’t fit into accepted beauty standards.

Sefakor’s advice to young people growing up African in Australia, is to although you can’t control other people’s prejudice, you can control how you respond.
