It is obligatory for men to work in order to earn a livelihood for himself, his wife and children.
Question: Some see it as disgrace and inferiority to work for someone, and to work as a shepherd or gardener.
Is It really so in terms of our religion?
Answer: It is not disgrace to do any kind of craftsmanship and trade, to do permissible works such as working as a shepherd, gardener, in constructions, in excavations, and carrying loads on one’s back for salary or wage.
Prophets and walis (those loved by Allahu Taala) have done those jobs. It is obligatory for men to work in order to earn a livelihood for himself, his wife and children. It is permissible to earn more in order to help others by working in any way of earning money. Hazrat Idris alaihi-salam worked as a tailor. Hazrat Davud alaihi-salam was a blacksmith. Hazrat Ibrahim alaihi-salam traded agricultural products and fabrics.
It was Hazrat Adem alaihi-salam who first wove fabric. Enemies of the religion write that the first men covered themselves with leaves, lived in caves. They do not have any document, voucher, or proof of their writings. Among the prophets Hazrat Isa (Jesus) alaihi-salam was a shoemaker.
Hazrat Nuh alaihi- salam did carpentry. Hazrat Sali alaihi-salam made and sold bags. Most of prophets worked as shepherds. A hadith of Rasul akram (the Prophet) alaihi-salam states: It is an omen of being unassuming to provide his family with their needs.
Rasul akram (the Prophet Mohammed alaihi-salam) bought and sold goods (He did trade). He mostly bought. He himself worked for wage, and he employed people to work for him. He worked in partnership with people. He represented and appointed representatives. He gave gifts and accepted gifts. He borrowed goods and kept deposits of people. He made endowments (“ waqf ”, money or land given for charity). He never got angry at anyone for worldly affairs. He never said to anyone anything that would hurt them.
He swore oaths and made people to swear oaths. He did the things he swore. There were also occasions in which he did not do them, and paid penance. He made quips and jokes, and his quips were always on the right path (the path of Allahu Taala), and they were useful. It will cause pride (arrogance) to hesitate, to be shy to do them. Many have been mistaken at this point. Such people have confused humility with disgrace and dishonour, and the nafs (nafs are not oneself. Nafs are a malignant force in humans, it is an adamant enemy to Allahu Taala) have deceived many people at this point.
Some theologians say that it is not obligatory to perform qurban as in the other three madhabs (other 3 Ahl as-Sunna sects than Hanafi Madhab). Does this have a basis?
Answer: Performing qurban is not obligatory, but wajib. It is written in Mizan Kubra and Menahic books that it is wajib in Hanafi sect, and sunna muakkadah in the other three sects. However, if one says that there is no performing qurban in Islam, they lose their iman (faith).
