An angry shopper has slammed Coles supermarket for using plastic wrap on five small bottles of olive oil.The customer posted a picture of the bottles to Reddit, saying the 'planet was doomed' because of the unnecessary use of plastic. 'Coles need to get their s**t together. Another pointless plastic product,' the shopper said.'We can recycle as much as we like, but as long as corporations don't change, we don't stand a chance.'Other Reddit users pointed out products that are also 'unnecessarily' packaged in plastic.'They ask us to re-use plastic bags while they aren't,' one user said.'Coles and other major stores like Woolworths only take on the recycling when it makes commercial sense to them,' another person said.A viewer of the post argued that the supermarket plastic bag ban introduced last year is not effective, and the government should instead encourage businesses to reduce plastic waste. 'It seems the majority of ''ignorant consumers'' actually believe the plastic bag ban was the winning blow in the fight against unnecessary waste,' they said. A former Coles employee came to the defense of the supermarket, saying recycling was a 'huge deal' at their store and they had 'three separate bins for different plastics'. A Coles spokesperson said they aimed to be 'Australia's most sustainable supermarket'. 'We understand the importance of appropriate packaging in maintaining food safety, supporting product longevity and reducing food waste,' the spokesperson said.'At the same time Coles is committed to making our packaging more sustainable.'
