Protesters in Rio urge more action on Amazon fires

Protesters in Rio urge more action on Amazon fires (23 Aug 2019) Hundreds of protesters gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Friday denouncing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and calling for greater action in combating the fires sweeping parts of the Amazon.

Under increasing international pressure to contain fires Bolsonaro on Friday authorised the use of the military to battle the massive blazes.

According to the presidential decree Brazilian forces will be deployed on Saturday to border areas, indigenous territories and other affected regions in the Amazon to assist in putting out fires for a month.

The armed forces will collaborate with public security and environmental protection agencies.

Small numbers of demonstrators earlier Friday gathered outside Brazilian diplomatic missions in Paris, London, Geneva and Bogota, Colombia to urge Brazil to do more to fight the fires.

A larger group of about 1,000 people protested outside the embassy in Montevideo, Uruguay.
