Why fear & guilt should never drive religious or spiritual practice. Can faith be enforced by fear? Fear and guilt should never be the driving force behind following a religion. For many faith is a set of rules that they have to abide by. You cannot be forced by fear to act in a righteous way. Caging desires with fear does not change who we are. A evil doer who ends up in prison does not become a good man all of a sudden if he still harbors those insticts that caused him to err in the first place. It is the fear of the law that prevents him. It has not changed who he is. Only with the realization of oneness, and the illusory nature of the material world do you become free. Moksha, Salvation, cannot be obtained by force by fear, or attained by ritualistic means.
