What was the Sanditon I ending?  While Austen herself was partial to a happy ending after the strife her characters endured in her novels, the writers of the show adaptation of Sanditon went for something decidedly more controversial for their series finale.  After eight weeks of watching Charlotte and Sidney’s slow-burning relationship carefully unfold and play out on screen, viewers were finally rewarded by seeing the pair share a kiss on the last night’s episode.  But things went downhill from there and despite Sidney confessing to Charlotte that: ‘I had hoped that when I returned I would be able to make you a proposal’ he then broke her heart by revealing he had to marry Eliza Campion instead.    Sidney then returned to London to marry his rich former flame in an effort to save Sanditon, saying to Charlotte before he left that if there was ‘any other way’ to save the seaside town he would be with her instead.  The pair has one final rendezvous on the cliffs, where Charlotte reprimanded Sidney for saying he didn’t love Eliza telling him: ‘She loves you and you have agreed to marry her so you must try to make her happy.’  A tearful Charlotte then swept away in her carriage, leaving Sidney wistfully looking after her.  ‘Sidney had to sacrifice his happiness with Charlotte. Divided for now, whatever the future holds for them, their love will endure,’ the I show tweeted after the finale.  But what does the future hold for Sidney and Charlotte? Will there be a second series of Sanditon?  Predicting that viewers would be calling for more after the controversial ending of series one, the show’s writer, Andrew Davies, told the Radio Times before Sanditon hit our screens: ‘the way we end series one, I hope we’ve ended at a point where the audience is going to say
