A spreading federal corruption probe has damaged the union’s standing during contract talks with Detroit’s automakers.
We’re going to be looking at every inch of this union to make sure we embrace tight controls. Rory Gamble Acting Head, United Auto Workers Union
Reuters reports Gamble's announcement came soon after federal prosecutors issued new charges against a former top UAW official.
Gamble replaces UAW president Gary Jones, who took a paid leave of absence after being linked to the ongoing corruption probe.
Former UAW VP and GM board member Joseph Ashton was charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and wire fraud.
Ten people have been charged in the investigation so far.
