The first time you can enroll in a Medigap plan is known as the Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period. This period lasts for 6-moths and begins the first day of the month you’re both 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B.
During this time frame, you’ll qualify for Guaranteed Issue rights, this means you get to avoid medical underwriting and the lowest premium rates will be available to you.
If you missed your opportunity to enroll during the Guaranteed Issue period, don’t worry. You can enroll in a Medicare Supplement at any time during the year; however, medical underwriting is typically required.
Many seniors will be approved when they undergo medical underwriting for a Medigap plan. Although, the premium is usually higher than it would’ve been if they applied during the Guaranteed Issue time.
If you turned 65 and decided to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’re eligible to cancel that plan within the first 12 months. You can re-enroll back into Original Medicare and enroll in a Medigap plan without having to answer health questions.
With a Medigap policy, you’re entitled to a 30-day “free look period”. This begins once the new Medigap policy beings.
If you lose coverage involuntarily, you may be eligible for a special enrollment period. This allows you to enroll in policy outside of the standard enrollment periods.
However, if you use this Medigap Enrollment Period, you may not be eligible for every Medigap plan. Not every Medigap plan accepts Guaranteed Issue Rights.
