CHINA is making hair-raising steps in its pursuit of military dominance over the US – and this includes its development of deadly nuclear weapons, for which Beijing is mimicking its rivals to test its most dangerous asset.
The Chinese military is building a colossal power facility designed to test the conditions of a nuclear weapon strike, similar to the existing Z Pulsed Power Facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The US' facility, according to Sandia National Laboratory, is the world's most powerful and efficient laboratory radiation source. A report reads: “It uses high magnetic fields associated with high electrical currents to produce high temperatures, high pressures, and powerful X-rays for research in high energy density science.
“The Z machine creates conditions found nowhere else on Earth."
But this may not be true for long, as a similar facility could be seen in Mianyang, in the southwest of China.
The city is where the Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics is located, a body that conducts research and testing into the use of nuclear weapons.
The South China Morning Post reported that the new testing facility could comfortably eclipse the US' equivalent technology, producing 22 times the amount of energy.
The report said that the facility is "designed to produce about 60 million joules of energy in an instant – roughly 22 times the 2.7 million joules generated at the Sandia facility".
It continues: “It does this by firing powerful electrical pulses at a target about the size of a spool of thread consisting of hundreds of tungsten wires, each thinner than a human hair.
"When the pulses pass through the wires, the tungsten explodes, evaporates and creates a plasma with a magnetic field so strong that the exploded particles are forced inward.
"The particles collide, producing intense radiation – mostly X-rays – and creating conditions that more accurately reflect a real nuclear explosion.”
China has placed a lot of emphasis on weapons development in recent years, as President Xi Jinping seeks superior hard power to produce political leverage in the multiple disputes Beijing is embroiled in.
Last week, reports emerged stating that a Chinese technology firm had developed attack drones, specifically designed for street combat in what appeared to be preparation for close-quarters ground combat.
A successful air-to-ground firing test was completed of the device which, despite its small size, can be used against armoured vehicles as well as opposing personnel while being controlled by soldiers on the ground.
The developers of the drone believe that the Tianyi has an operational distance of three miles, allowing it to seek out opposing forces from long range.
On October 1, the 70th China Anniversary celebrations saw Beijing flaunt its development of a whole host of weapons, including missiles, armoured vehicles and thousands of soldiers.
A DF-41 long range missile, unmanned aircraft, submarine launched missiles and other vehicles were on display, highlighting the huge investment President Xi Jinping has allocated to
One of these weapons was the 'Sharp Sword', an unmanned drone which features a striking wing design and the exhaust is concealed giving it enhanced stealth capabilities.
The Chinese President said in his speech during the celebrations: “There is no force that can shake the status of this great nation. No force can stop the Chinese people and the Chinese nation forging ahead.
