WATCH: Sen. Cruz asks if quid pro quos are often used in foreign policy | Trump impeachment trial Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, asked President Donald Trump’s legal team whether quid pro quos are often used in U.S. foreign policy. Alan Dershowitz, an attorney representing Trump, said that the U.S. often withholds money to get other countries to do what it wants. “If a president does something that he believes will get him elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment,” Dershowitz said. Lead House manager Adam Schiff pushed back against that argument. “All quid pros are not the same. Some are legitimate and some are corrupt, and you don’t have to be a mind reader to find out which is which,” Schiff said.

Senators had their first chance to ask questions of the House managers and President Donald Trump’s legal team on Wednesday, Jan. 29. That came after both sides were given three days, respectively, to present their case. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The questions come ahead of a vote on whether to bring forward witnesses and documents as part of the Senate trial. The Senate must now decide whether to acquit the president or convict him of the charges and remove him from office.
