Why Birembo is important to NRA’s lore

Why Birembo is important to NRA’s lore As we have heard, tomorrow, President Yoweri Museveni will lead veterans, youths and well-wishers in a symbolic trek to celebrate the heroic sacrifices of patriotism, focusing on the Front for National Salvation (FRONASA) and the National Resistance Army (NRA).
The six day walk, code named “Africa Kwetu,” will begin in Galamba in Wakiso District and end at Birembo in Kakumiro District. In Birembo, the President will camp at the War Memorial, and in the morning, address the trekkers at Birembo War Memorial Technical Institute.
The NRA rebellion against then government forces - the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) - lasted five years, and Birembo is significant because it was where one of the longest and fiercest battles between the guerrillas and the UNLA was fought.
The battle was a turning point in the war.
GILLIAN NANTUME visited Birembo and found that many residents still remember this lone battle.
