Kinds of sentences: In this lesson I will teach you the kinds of sentences in English grammar with details.
There are 4 main kinds of sentences.
They are:
1. Declarative sentence
2. Interrogative sentence
3. Imperative sentence
4. Exclamatory sentence
5. The optative sentence is also considered a kind of sentence
Now let’s discuss these kinds one by one in detail with examples.
1. Declarative Sentence:
A sentence that makes a statement.
There are two kinds of Declarative sentence; namely
i. Positive sentence
ii. Negative sentence
Positive sentence: A sentence that gives a positive statement
For example:
Mr. Siraj is a teacher.
I live in Karachi.
Aslam goes to hospital every day.
We shall go to Naran next month
Negative sentence: A sentence that gives a negative statement.
For example: Mr. Siraj is not a doctor.
I do not live in Peshawar.
Zafar does not go to college every day.
Next we discuss Interrogative sentence:
A sentence that asks a question. Or a sentence that is used to ask something is called an interrogative sentence. The sign of interrogation is used at the end of such sentence. Sign of interrogation is “?”.
For example:
Do you live in Lahore?
Is Aftab a doctor?
Next comes the imperative sentence:
A sentence that expresses an order, request or advice.
For example: Get out of the room.
Please lend me some money.
Next is exclamatory sentence: A sentence that expresses a strong or sudden feelings.
A sign of exclamation is used after exclamatory words.
For example:
Hurrah! We have won the match.
Alas! My father is dead.
Now we discuss the Optative sentence:
A sentence that expresses some wish. For example
May you live long!
May god bless us all!
Would that he were alive today.
Would that we had learnt English in our childhood.
