Luke displays one of the finest examples of New York State stoneware we have ever handled: a folk art beverage cooler bearing the extremely detailed incised design of a mermaid (as well as a mythological "seahorse"), along with an 1825 inscription. Made by Cornwall, NY potter Moses Clark Bell for a local clothier named Charles S. Brown, relatively few examples of New York stoneware of this quality remain in private hands. We are privileged to offer this cooler in our Fall 2019 Auction of American Stoneware & Redware Pottery, to be held October 26.
