Pomfret is mainly 3 types- The Rup Chanda or Chinese Pomfret, Fali Chanda or The Silver Pomfret, The Brown Pomfret or Hail Chanda. The ideal size of a Pomfret is between 470 to 500 grams.
Pomfrets are perciform fishes belong to the Bramidae family. The family consists of 20 species. They are normally found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. The largest species, the Atlantic pomfret, Brama brama, grows up to 3 ft long. The fish meat is white in color.
Rupchada has high protein and full of omega 3 fatty acid that reduces the chances of heart diseases.
Rupchada has a very high demand in the fish market and is comparatively very expensive.

The Rup Chanda or Chinese Pomfrets are generally found in the muddy bottom area near the sea coasts where the depth of water is 100 m. They like to move in groups. Sometimes they are found in the estuarine brackish water. They feed on soft, small invertebrates and can reach a maximum length of about 40 cm. The average weight is about 0.5 kg. Gillnets and trawlnets are generally used to catch them. Dried Rup Chanda has a high demand in the local market.
