So dating back to the beginning of the NBL pre-season, I made a video introducing you guys to Brazilian Didi Louzada, a Syndey king next stars player who was sent over to the NBL for a further year of development. After being drafted in the second round 35th overall by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2019 NBA draft. During the pre-season, when Syndey faced off against the Illawarra Hawks. Louzada completely dominated the matchup between him and Lamelo Ball. Tallying 24 points in the game, while holding Lamelo to a humbling 4 points on 1/10 shooting on the other end of the matchup.
This game was without a doubt Lamelo's worst of the pre-season and possibly in Australia altogether so far, which is why this regular season matchup was as highly anticipated as it was. Coming into the game, the Syndey Kings sat top of the NBL table. With an 8-1 record to start the season, The Illawarra Hawks on the other hand. Find themselves at rock bottom in the last place, with just 2 wins so far.
Still, though this game broke all kinds of records, as the Lamelo-Louzada matchup among many other things. Saw this game set a record NBL attendance, with a sellout crowd at the kings home arena in Syndey. The game and matchup didn't disappoint either, which is what we're about to analyze in today's video. The same we did when RJ and the breakers faced off against Melo's hawks earlier this year.
Anyways to start the game off, it was Did Louzada who had the taste of first blood. Knocking down an early three on the left-wing following a nice hesitation move. Lamelo a few moments later, with the help of a screen crossed by Didi before scooping it back to his rolling big man for his first assist of the game. Lamelo continued to get his teammates involved, picking out his shooter early on the left wing for a trey ball. Before then knocking down a three of his own on the right-wing shortly after.
Melo continued to be aggressive, embracing the matchup against Didi. Going past him and finishing a tough layup through contact for an and-one. Following a hawks steal on the defensive end, Melo bagged himself another assist, pushing the ball in transition and finding the shooter in the corner for 3 more.
That would be all she wrote for the first half, in the third it was all Melo again. Where he caught Louzada sleeping on defense, faking him out with a cut before finishing a reverse layup by Bogut on the far side of the basket.
Louzada then finally answered back with a few highlights plays off his own, firstly shifting by his defender and dumping it off to Bought inside for a dunk. Before finding his teammate for a one-handed scoop pass in traffic for his only other assist of the game.
Lamelo responded to this by going into full-blown attack mode, swishing a floater from the top of the paint. And then getting by his defender and finding Booney inside for an easy layup.
To wrap up the third, we saw a nice play from two of Sydney's vets. With Casper Ware finding Bogut for an alley-oop dunk. Two players who played a massive part in the match's outcome.
Anyways now into the fourth, following a nice defensive play by Louzada with Melo benched. When checking back into the game, Melo immediately found Booney with a high inside pass for an easy two. With the game close, Lamelo tried to take things into his own hands in the fouth. When down three with 4 mins to go, he created space with a between the legs move for a runner on the below. And then when down 2 with 3 minutes to go, MB faked out Bogut before finishing a one-handed scoop layup.
With less than 2 minutes to go, Illawarra trailing 83-79. Lamelo trying to will his team to victory, loses control of the ball. Louzada capitalizes, takes it coast to coast and avoids the block to put Syndey up 6. The game finished 92-87 to Syndey, who maintained their place at the top of the NBL standings. While Illawarra yet again fails to close the deal in the fourth quarter and remain bottom of the league. As for the individual matchup, this goes around Lamelo definitely got the better of Louzada. With 16 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists on 7-19 shooting. While Didi shot just 2-7 for the game, Which proved to be enough for his team to take the W on their home floor.
