In US news and current events today, Trump made false or misleading claims every 42 seconds on average during his Iran speech on January 8, 2020. Watch this video as we fact check all of Trump's false claims.
President Trump addressed the nation after Iran issued a retaliation attack that occurred on January 8, 2020.
Iran launched 'tens' of missiles at the al-Asad airbase in Iraq, where U.S. forces are housed, according to Iran's state TV. This is Iran's first known retaliation since a U.S. strike ordered by President Trump killed top general Qasem Soleimani on January 3, 2020. Trump tweeted this week, 'The United States just spent Two Trillion Dollars on Military Equipment... If Iran attacks an American Base, or any American, we will be sending some of that brand new beautiful equipment their way.'
Iran has 'concluded' its strikes on U.S. forces and does 'not seek escalation or war,' the country's foreign minister said Wednesday. 'Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter,' Foreign Minister Javad Zarif tweeted, referencing missiles Iran launched at U.S. forces stationed in Iraq on Tuesday. 'We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression.' U.S. officials said the strikes caused no U.S. casualties.
