Soleimani was hailed as a national hero in Iran, and widely viewed as the second most powerful person in the country after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

Soleimani was killed in a drone strike in Baghdad, ordered by US President Donald Trump. It marks a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the killing sparking sparking concerns of a wider conflict as Iran has vowed “severed revenge”.

US correspondent David Grossman reports from Washington DC.
