Masks, ghungroos, painted bodies and even whistles - Holi the Nandurbar way

Masks, ghungroos, painted bodies and even whistles - Holi the Nandurbar way Celebrated around in the month of March, when Spring is in full swing and the whole Forest is in bloom, Uli, is the greatest festival of the Pawaras, an indigenous forest dwelling tribe, living in the Satpura mountain range in the Narmada river valley of Maharashtra.

Celebrated by dances, wearing special attire made out of bird feathers, animal skins, bamboo, forest fruits and flowers, the festival is also a means to express Art and the creativity of the people. The celebration continues for 10-15 days, with people visiting different villages, dancing day and night.

The festival is the centre of people's attention and people often spend whole year, in some small way to prepare for the festival, collecting peacock feathers in the forest, making props etc. The initiation for the festival begins generally 5 days before the commencement, when the participating men, together have a bath at the river and begin to follow a strict code of conduct until the last day of the celebration; they are supposed to stay clean and even avoid stepping on any dirt, not sleep or even sit on a bed but only on the floor, not to touch women and children until the last day and eat no meat, and drink no alcohol till the first day of celebration. The rituals and performances are to fulfill vows of the participating men and of their families, be it mother, sister, children or wives. Since this day the mood is absolutely festive, with people all the time engaging in singing and making merry!

The next few days are spent preparing for the performances, making the props, the peacock feather head gears, bamboo hats, drums, musical instruments, foraging the forest for fruits, or flowers and stones to be used, making wooden props, and hunting places to find the required attires!
